So, since he is a free agent, and nobody is going to sign him now - is he really the first openly gay athlete IN a major sport?

It's pretty obvious what is going on here. The guy is what, 36? His contract is coming up and it probably won't be renewed. Come out that you're gay, and then pressure a new contract based on discrimination.

I don't care if he is gay and only has a GED, what does him having gone to Stanford have to do with anything?
IMO if you feel the need to spend 30 minutes interviewing other gay people and making him out to be the nicest guy in the world then you are somehow trying to justify or legitimize his sexual orientation. I dunno, seems a little forced to me.
He's not in a sport or profession that has any bearing on who he has sex with. I'm not seeing the point of making it a big deal. Work out the locker room issues if any come up, and let him play like he did before.

i heard about this like 2-3 weeks ago on TMZ, but since the chick from baylor went to the WNBA she was in all the "openly gay nike" searches i could find. except this one from gaystar of course.
if it means anything i closed the window once i got the link without even reading the article!
