Our big time recruit Brandon Williams has been turning heads in spring ball... just didnt do well in the scrimmage. We have a loaded backfield so who knows how it'll look. OU will be RB by committee.. I honestly think Calhoun wont get any playing time, he has been a bust for us so far.

Was announced today that Johnathon Gray will announce his verbal friday (his birthday) at 9:10am. This all coming from Longhorn media outlets. Hopefully, that means good news for Texas.



And today new Texas WR coach Darrel Wyatt went to visit Dorial Green-Beckham. Fingers crossed. The one thing i like in this situation is that coach Wyatt knows the kid and his dad from the last couple of years while being at Kansas

NORMAN — Tuesday, Oklahoma will conduct its 15th and final practice, capping spring football.

Below, five things we found out about the Sooners from the spring:

Five things we learned at Oklahoma football this spring

• 1. Corey Nelson is going to be on the field a lot

The hard-hitting sophomore linebacker from Dallas put together the best spring of any Sooner on the roster.

Because he plays behind Travis Lewis at weakside linebacker, getting Nelson on the field regularly will require some creativity from defensive coordinator Brent Venables. But whether it’s playing some 3-4 or lining Nelson up at end in passing situations, the Sooners will find a way.

“We’re going to get him on” the field, coach Bob Stoops said. “We’ll find those opportunities, for sure.”

• 2. The backfield will be manned by committee

With workhorse back DeMarco Murray gone, OU will return to a multi-back attack featuring Roy Finch, Brennan Clay, Brandon Williams, Jonathon Miller and possibly even walk-on Dominique Whaley, who led all backs in rushing in the spring game.

Each brings a different strength to the table. Finch makes people miss; Clay can catch the ball; Williams has the top-end speed; and Miller runs tough between the tackles.

Finch has the best chance to command the majority of the carries, but even then, touches would still be shared.

“I don’t really believe any of them are 40-snap-a-game guys,” Stoops said. “We don’t need one guy that has to do it. These guys all bring a different speed with a little change-up in how they run and those kinds of things.

“As long as they’re taking care of the football, we’ll use them all.”

• 3. Drew Allen is the No. 2 quarterback, at least for now

Redshirt freshman Blake Bell has all the tools to be a big-time college quarterback. Size, speed, arm strength — it’s all there. But count on Allen, sharp while outperforming Bell in the Red-White game, being the second-string quarterback next season.

“Drew made a couple of big throws, took care of the ball,” said starting quarterback Landry Jones. “The (spring game) is the closest thing you come to a real game, so he can take a lot of things out of this.”

• 4. The secondary is going to be fine, with or without Jamell Fleming

Going into the offseason, secondary was the defense’s biggest concern. And that was before returning All-Big 12 cornerback Fleming had to leave school because of academic issues.

Fleming could still return by August. But even if he doesn’t, defensive backfield doesn’t figure to be a weakness.

Aaron Colvin’s transition from cornerback to safety has been seamless, and former No. 1 instate recruit Gabe Lynn appears ready to step into the lineup at cornerback opposite veteran Demontre Hurst.

“The secondary is where we’ve lost people,” Stoops said. “But I believe these guys in there are going to be really good.”

• 5. Lane Johnson finally found a home on the offensive line

OU may have lost a tackle this spring, but they seemingly have found another.

Jarvis Jones is out for the next five months after suffering a torn patella ligament early on in spring drills. But while attempting to compensate for his loss, the Sooners unearthed Johnson, the former junior-college quarterback recruited to OU as a tight end who moved to defensive end last season.

After shifting to tackle, the 6-foot-7, 280-pound Johnson shined, and isn’t just warranting a spot in the rotation up front; he eventually could press for a starting role.

“It’s gonna work out wonderfully for him, and for us,” Stoops said. “He’s going to end up being a really special player there.”

IN 2004, OKLAHOMA SIGNED two of the top four players in the country in QB Rhett Bomar and RB Adrian Peterson. Bomar lasted only two years in Norman and was booted off the team for accepting payment for work he didn’t do. But Peterson went on to finish second in the Heisman race his freshman season, and is now an All-Pro with the Minnesota Vikings.

In 2012, the Sooners have the chance to sign two of the nation’s top prospects. Possibly the nation’s top two overall recruits.

Wednesday, MaxPreps/CBS Sports recruiting guru Tom Lemming unveiled his Top 100, and at the top of the list are wideout Dorial Green-Beckham and quarterback Gunner Kiel, two players who appear to be strongly considering the Sooners.

Kiel, who seems destined to be the consensus No. 1 QB, is actually in Norman today, visiting OU for the second time in two months. Kiel, a native of Columbus, Ind., is also considering Notre Dame, where his uncle played QB. Alabama, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Missouri, Tennessee and Wisconsin are also in the mix for Kiel, but this could come down to the Sooners and Irish. If he chooses one of those two, Kiel will get the chance to play the school he spurred. OU and Notre Dame are scheduled to play in 2012 in Norman and 2013 in South Bend.

Snagging Green-Beckham won’t be an easy task for the Sooners. Just about every premier program in the country is recruiting him. Late last month, he visited Alabama.

Im dreaming, but that would be the shit if we did snag both of them.

IT’S NOT ALL THAT UNTHINKABLE that four different running backs — Roy Finch, Brennan Clay, Jonathon Miller and true freshman Brandon Williams — will have a role in the offense next season.

Finch is the most proven of the bunch, but he’s still only at “80-85 percent” coming back from surgery to repair a recurring stress fracture.

That has given Miller and Williams plenty of time in the backfield, and both have been impressive. Miller’s powerful style is a nice foil to Finch and Clay, both scatbacks.

“Jonathan is somebody that I know if we had to play tomorrow, I could count on Jonathan to know what he has to do besides just getting the ball in his hand,” said running backs coach Cale Gundy, who is giving each back about 25-30 reps each practice. “He knows our system, he’s learning and he’s almost one of those guys that always knows what he’s supposed to be doing.”

“He’s been here for two years. He’s watched a lot of film and Jonathan is a smart young man.”

Williams is proving that he can be a significant factor in the offense next season, despite being on campus for a total of three months.

“I’ve been really surprised at how quick he’s been able to adapt because our system is complicated,” Gundy said. “There are a lot of responsibilities, but he is really learning the concepts of the pass plays and understanding pass protection. The more reps he gets, he’s going to be better at it. He’s made good progress in the practices we’ve had.

“Is he there? No. But he’s probably made more progress than I thought he would.”

I see Calhoun being the odd man out in the RB rotation unless someone gets hurt. Calhoun was the #1/2 rb coming out of HS... hasnt done much.

Yeah, when i was out there for my bday it was kind of a cluster fuck and i really couldn't do what i wanted to. So the next time i know that i'll be out there i'll let you know.

Ah. I know I read that Gilbert threw a horrible INT into double coverage and was about .500 on his passing.

I didnt see the game though.

From what i've read on other OU forums, UT had a good defense but the offense looked hideous. I'll probably catch it later.

Maybe, but even then you had to ask youself, was that the D looking THAT good or the oline still being THAT bad. Even though i do think the Dline will be alot better this year with some young guys stepping up.

I sure hope the QB's work hard over the summer. And they should, knowing that the job is up for grabs for the taking.
