Yeah, modern troops DO have good food compared to many past wars and I think it became expected. Truth is, that is a huge luxury. MREs are plenty good. I would still like to hear that if possible, 1 hot a day is provided though.
Depends on the base and depends on whether or not the DFAC falls under a LOGCAP contract, also where that base is slated on the closure list.

Go to a COP an you will not have LOGCAP most of the times but there are some that do. Even still all our DFACs are serving two hot meals if not three, still.

As someone else stated above if a soldier/airman/Marine ect isn't complaining about something he/she is probably dead There's always something to bitch about. Shitty hours, shitty food, shitty living conditions in the barracks, blah blah blah.

At least if they are bitching you know they are alive and are generally in decent spirits when they have something to bitch about.

This summed up every deployment I was ever on, I hear people bitching and moaning about meals and quality of life on deployments now and I want to just slap them.

In OIF1 03-04 we got 1 hot meal, we had 1 sat phone for the entire BN to share, If you were lucky you could make a 10 minute phone call once a month. I learned to make friends real quick with the signal people so I could sometime get on the internet to check and send email. We had no AC, or warm water. On the plus side we were actually allowed to fight and did not have our hands tied by politics.

The boat gets a choice of a cook or a corpman. crew can give themselves shots or take turn washing dishes. Most choose the former

I know that the chow hall that only does BBQ and sandwich style foods that is nearest to my office 200yrds vs a mile walk is closing down in a few days. The nearest DFAC is going to stop breakfast also.

Doesn't bother me one fucking bit cause I don't eat in the DFACs anyways. Fact is, if a troop stops complaining, you need to check his pulse and breathing to make sure he is still alive. Everyone wants this war to end but you fail to realize the massive logistical undertaking it is to shut down bases and fold our supplies, materials and equipment inwards. Trust me, I am living right in the middle of the retro-sort, and transition shut down operations.

Want a hot meal, grab a fucking oatmeal pack, pour it into a cup of hot water and enjoy.

On the contrary, I spent a lot of time traveling around Iraq in 2010. There were still FOBS that only served 1 meal a day. We had been there for 7 years, and guys were eating MRE's for 2 meals a day. The one hot meal was garbage as fuck, and prepared by army cooks.
What you described is the difference between an Army ran DFAC vs a Fluor/KBR ran. Now expand that to every aspect from water production, power, plumbing, etc, etc and you see why wars these days were civilians take care of troops, we do a better job than their own commands would.

I have been to over 35 bases in theater and experienced every level of service and chow you can imagine. Even though I don't eat in DFACs anymore the difference between the worst Army and Civ ran dfac is amazing.

But everyone wants to take away the civilian contractor from the troops. Fact is and proven we are cheaper to hire to take care of troops than troops taking care of themselves.

Ship food. Worst food ever. End of story. You know it's bad when you have to post rovers in the storage area with the MRE's because the shit is getting stolen by squids and the ship store sells out of Cup O Noddle in 30 seconds.
