and TWO BIG RED STRIPES on their PT gear to humiliate them some more. I thought it was funny how they have the skinny guys painting the stripes while the fat ones got to watch.

Hadn't even graduated Army Basic Training and they call you Ranger? That is funny. When I went to MCRD San Diego for Boot Camp I was Recruit the entire time. Couldn't even refer to myself as a Marine until I graduated. This goes back to the tradition thing Jester talks about.Originally posted by Forever_frost View PostOh he had me running everywhere and I was first picked for all duties. Hated it but I was dropping nickle runs without breathing hard and got to Korea in great shape
Oh and I went in weighing 130 at 17 and came out weight 135. I forged and hid a double rats tag and still couldn't eat enough. Oh, how I miss my youthful days.

I put on 20 pounds. I was a lot more spun up back then, sort of miss that fight first, use common sense later mentality.

He is saying that alot of guys wanted to be Marines but felt that maybe they couldnt do it so they went with another branch. Make no mistake, Marine Corps bootcamp is hardcore. I went in at 17 weighing 150lbs and 3 months later graduated weighing 172lbs.....and that wasnt fat. You run and run and run and run and run. You push yourself to the furthest limits that your body can handle and then you push it a bit further. It is physically and mentally the most demanding thing I have done and set the standard for what I have based anything else "hard" in my life. I hate talking to people about the Corps because it is honestly a boring subject. Make no mistake though, every kid you see come out of bootcamp has zero problems stomping the shit out of the enemy and will do it ferociously. If you have not been through this training, then no amount of explaining it actually compares to it. The drill instructors have mastered the art of turning out stone cold killers that are some of the best at what they do. I was in before they came out with The Crucible so i have no idea what boot is like nowadays but i can assure you that the DI's arent making soft men. Our traditions and training has been passed down from generation to generation since 1775.Originally posted by exlude View Posthuh?
If you want to see a small example of perfection, watch a graduating class march across the grinder.

Oh most don't want to talk about specifics but have no problem admitting they served

Being proud of service is expected, but not always of merit. I've only had one friend that was in the Marines and he never wanted to talk about it. Through other friends he had around a dozen confirmed kills. He never wanted to talk about it. I have a feeling that Marines that saw action are like other soldiers. They just don't want to talk about it, they want that to be another life, far away from their friends and families.Originally posted by Forever_frost View PostOh most who served are proud of it and will let it be known be it caps, shirts, tats or just their presence, you tend to know who service members are. Even Coasties get a bit of steel in basic.
The ones that brag about it, haven't done shit.

Marines are a proud bunch. Because when given the option of being a Marine and joining the Army, they picked the one whose slogan is the few the proud, not Army of one or Army strong or be all that you can be, or whatever their slogan is this week. No dig on the Army but most wanted to be a Marine first they just made another choice.
