Although, I agree with you on a lot of things - to include this - I think the problem IS much bigger than the individual teacher.

If you get punished/lesser pay for doing what (you and I think) is right in the class room - or get more pay...etc...etc for doing what your superiors want you to do - I'm going to do what gets me more pay.

Assuming the teachers are actually doing as told, I can dislike it - but can't really hold them responsible for state/federal policies and decisions. It's more our fault at that point.

Don't get me wrong, I do realize there are problems at multiple levels on this, but he seems to be putting it all off on everything but the teachers. We fixed our problem with public schools by taking our children out of the equation.

As long as teachers are only evaluated on how their students do on a standardized state exam then that is all they will teach. I am thankful that I grew up in a time when teachers actually built their own lesson plans.

Denny pointing at the educators is the wrong way to go about it in my humble opinion. In Texas we have school boards as I am sure you are aware. With that said and as an administrator I know as all administrators know when it comes to school districts, all people employed by the district work for the tax payers. The truth of the matter is, it is their kids and their money, they guide the process we only advise and implement local policy, as long as no kids are placed in harms way we have to follow the directives of the school board that the local citizens vote into office. The board writes the policies and makes the rules in accordance with the Texas Education Code. The TEA (Texas Education Agency) writes the Texas Education Code and is supervised by a person appointed by the governor to serve as Commissioner of Education currently Michael L. Williams. Now back to local items as school administrators we make recommendations to the school boards, it is at their discretion what happens post recommendation. If you are not satisfied with the direction the school district in your town is going then as a tax payer you have a right to address any concerns in front of the school board in an open forum.

Maybe you have some updates on that one.

I am not sure what your concept of the majority is Denny, we have approx. 320,000 teachers and 75,000 peace officers here in the great state of Texas. I would dare say that well over 70% are productive. I know this will not change your opinion in any way. I hold that if you insist on finding the negative qualities in others you will always find it in a small number.
