The kiddos great grandfather was on the USS New Orleans, which lost 150 ft of her bow, in the Battle of Tassafaronga, to torpedo fire. The sailors on the ship rigged a bow out of coconut logs and made it to Sidney. They still have yearly reunions in TX. If you ever get the chance to attend a USS New Orleans reunion, I would recommend it. Listening to these great men speak freely of their experiences was always an overwhelming and amazing experience. I'm truly thankful that my children and I were able to listen to the stories of their service (and though most of them would disagree, their heroism) from the men, themselves.
Pictures of the damage and their temporary solution.
