The suits helped them with strength and agility not powers. The yellow sun gave Zod powers after exposure. Its their training as "soldiers" that helped Zod adapt to his new powers so quickly. It took Clark 33 years because he was afraid of his powers. He wasn't born into that role. Soldiers are trained to adapt.

They acted just like Superman did before he discovered he could fly. They had to discover the powers. The sun amplified their natural movements, they didn't know about flying and heat vision yet.
