There are a lot of of places that are selling complete uppers for right around $400. I've been very happy with both of my Del-Ton uppers. aimsuplus and palmettostatearmory both usually have good deals too.
If you haven't already, register over at ar15.com, there are a lot of sponsors over there that have good deals on things and it is a great source of info.

Will the parts from our upper group buy be better quality?

I haven't bought a complete DPMS upper but have used many of their parts to build uppers with no problem. The gas block on the mentioned complete upper was prolly not lined up correctly, very easy to do and usually an easy fix.....

I literally just finished my upper. From the first piece I ordered to today when the last part showed up it was about 5 weeks. Now if I had ordered everything at once, I would've waited about 2 weeks.

Although, it did cost twice what that DPMS one did and it's also for .300 Blackout.

My buddy just bought a DPMS and it shoots just fine. The upper looks good. As well as the DPMS i shot before i bought my first AR.

The last dpms upper I saw had a misaligned gas block and wouldn't cycle. But, I think that was the exception.
