So you want to mod your Maglite?

I've seen flashlights that you can cook with. Can you cook with this Maglite after the conversion?
Also, How did the neighbors appreciate the spot light and laser show that night?

Ha on the UFO, from my front yard all the planes that land at either love or DFW (I assume its DFW because of the volume of planes) their landing pattern must point them right at me and those landing lights are bright! I do not build the lasers. I am going to check to see how may of the heat sinks I can get made by my coworker and I will let any interested people know early this next week. (He is out until Monday) I am really not trying to make a buck on this so maybe you could gtg and I would show several of you how, I could even provide tools. If you just have to have someone else do it for you maybe I would do a couple for a small fee but I would rather show you how and you do it.

I might be interested in building one of these mag lights if the price can be brought down a bit by grouping the purchases together.

Pretty much any laser you find on the net has an extremely over rater power output and I would not trust ANY online vendor of their claims on power output. A green laser with a wavelength of 532nm is the brightest laser to the eye that you can get. For instance.... the laser in the video is a blue 532nm and is tested and puts out a real 2w or 2000mw. A green 532nm with a power rating of 200mw will be brighter to the human eye. Also not all lasers are equal as far as pointing distance. The green 532nm style use a technology called DPSS and it involves CAREFULLY setting up a series of lens, a crystal, and the diode. It is almost impossible to the average person to build a high power 532nm green laser. Also say if you have a true 200mw output green 532nm laser you could not find anything far enough away that you could not put a dot on that you could visibly see. I was hitting reflectors on the real tall TV antennas that are in cedar hill from my front yard in Midlothian with a 300mw green. Those are MILES (at least 5) away from me. These are the lasers that are the real danger to airplanes as you can hit them even at near cruising altitude, especially some of the american airlines planes that have the polished bellys. As far as the blue goes it is much easier to manufacture as it is basically just a diode with a focusing lens in front of it. This type of technology does not have the distance pointing that the greens have as the beam will diverge at distance and you can do nothing about it. It still will point a long damn way though. If you are really interested shoot me a PM and I will get you setup.
Wanted something that burns stuff, not that I need it, but I knew green is the most visible. I'll shoot you a P/m shortly.
Edit: I quoted before your edit. I understand the full responsibility in owning a high power laser and the effects they can cause. I have (or had) a family member on the other side that was really into lasers and was taught a little about them before I lost contact. Don't plan on messing with anyones eyes or mine. I looked up the specs on them and posted a little safety info above just incase someone else was interested.Last edited by JJs89lx; 09-21-2011, 08:07 PM.

I am currently using a charger that I have wires held to the contact points with small magnets. That will knock off a chunk right there. At that point your down to around $60 if you already have a maglite. The other stuff can be had cheaper if several people are wanting to do this. Just splitting the shipping between a few folks will knock it down at least another $10. When I got started on it I was thinking a max investment of around $60 and that grew a little because I wanted a nice fresh non beat up maglite to start with and I had to order some stuff and pay all the shipping myself.
If anyone wants a laser like that they are about $150 to the door with rechargeables and a charger (that can also be modded for the maglite project)
Interested in where you get that laser pointer for $150. I might just be interested in it. Would really like to buy a green one like it.

Any visible-beam laser over 1/2 watt is in the most hazardous laser safety classification, Class 4, due to the following:
Direct and reflected eye hazard. At close range, the direct beam can “pop” an eye. Even a reflection off a shiny surface or off a window is enough to cause eye damage.
Skin burn hazard. The beam causes a painful burn that leaves a scar.
Materials burn hazard.Common materials can char, burn, or burst into flame.

Finally, the beam is a more worrisome visual hazard to aircraft due to its higher power. Already, there is an epidemic of pilots being hit by laser light during landing or takeoff. People have been jailed for aiming a 3 milliwatt (3/1000 watt) laser at aircraft. The Spyder III Pro Arctic is 33,000% more powerful.
It's not recommended that every people people buy any Class 4 laser, if someone must have one then they should choose a laser with FDA compliant safety features like those in PL-C lasers. These features include key switch, aperture stop, remote connector key, etc; the laser safety glasses of appropriate density are also necessary for every laser user.
