So, this thread alone had me go out and try out an upgrade from the Nikon Prostaff 3x9x40s I love so much.

I went and got a deal on a Burris Fullfield II 4.5x14x42 . I consider this an entry level scope into what could be called the "real scope" market. Not the 1000+ dollar scopes for sure. I've not been able to shoot with this scope yet but I can surely tell a difference just bore sighting and playing around with it.

With the difference I've seen between....

20-50 dollar scopes and the Nikon
    the Nikon and the Burris...

...I'd half expect the 1000+ optics to turn night into day automatically. Maybe even turn the bullet if you're missing. It just gets better and better. It's sort of like you can't understand how it would get better, then it just does.

I'm going to stop now. However, I think I'm getting optics fever too. It's quite a bit more interesting then it was to me a few months ago. I can now fully support the rifle cost and scope cost being the same - to an extent.

I can hand throw a 105mm howitzer round to a 1/8" group at 1000 yards.

I never put 2 and 2 together. Thank you for the tip.

Bunch of wussies act like hitting a 500 yard target with 50K optics is hard when grunts hit less at more.

Now, at my old age I may need to get my optics (read: glasses) tuned in (read: zeroed).
I can hit a target with open sights as well. The Marines make you hit man sized targets at 500 yard with open sights.

The difference is shooting a shotgun pattern with open sights at 500 yards, and shooting a 3" group with optics at 500 yards.

Also, the goal here is 1,000 yard shooting.

I seriously doubt you can hit a 1,000 yard target with open sights.
