Weirdist handshake I've had was when a man told me not to squeeze his hand so hard, I thought it was a joke until we departed with a handshake and he said it again with an attitude.

Most women I know (including many wonderfully intelligent, sweet, all around great women), give dainty handshakes. In fact, when a woman gives a real firm handshake, it's likely to make them seem a little bull dyke-ish. I agree with the above posters who said it's tough shaking a woman's hand, because most give and expect to receive a gentle, polite shake where you're simply going through the motion. Every now an then you get the chick who wants to shake like a man, as if they have something to prove.

Without any doubt, if I shook every woman's hand the way I shake a man's, I'd get a lot of whining and/or dirty looks.

That said, men should give other men a firm handshake. I have giant paws, and seem to get the fingers grabbed a lot. Come in flat palmed and wait for full engagement to start the squeeze. Oh, and why do some little guys have to squeeze as hard as they can until their veins pop out of their neck? Trying too hard is almost as bad as a limp handshake.

You don't have to squeeze the shit out of someone's hand like you have something to prove to have a good handshake. When a chick pinches the tips of my fingers with two fingers and a thumb, yeah, I automatically think, "dumb bitch."

Wtf is up with this. The last two clients I've met with, they reach in all weird, hand already half-closed, and it forces you to do a half-asses finger shake. It's just weird, and it seems there's really no way to recover. Anyone gone through this? I've always been taught that for business meetings you give a good firm hand-shake; anything less is cause for dismissal.

If you limp wrist me, I'll shake it hard and firm regardless. If you surprise me with a manlier shake than even I deliver, I will man up to your level immediately.

An awkward handshake is when someone goes for the shake when your right hand is occupied, like working on a car. Or, when you initiate an handshake with someone missing a right arm (I've done that many times).

Oh... and the bro shake - the vertical hand grasp, chest bump thing... Sometimes I get guys that go in for the bro shake, and I dont' expect it. Then it makes me feel uncomfortable. Or, especially when I fail to achieve proper hand approach angle, and they mistakenly assume I'm going for a bro shake. Then they think I'm some sort of douche. After this awkward moment the possiblity of me remembering your name drops from 20% to 5%.

Dudes just get a real handshaking and no problems there generally. Just women, shit. I go in mildly firm and try to adjust on the fly.

I think a lot of guys are the same way. When I shake a woman's hand, I'd say that about 75% will do the girl handshake. I dealt with a lot of men in oil field accounts when I worked in outside sales, and none of those redneck muthafuckas would have taken me seriously if I had a girl handshake. You could literally see their attitude change when I shook their hands.

Like Mosfet said though, I give them the lead in a business setting. They will tell you the way they want their shake in how they present their hand.

In a non business setting, I don't give them a choice. I put my hand out palm up and middle knuckles facing in a straight line toward the lady, giving her but one option to put her hand in mine. I see it as a sign of respect to insist.

That's usually my most common call out. I'll give a man the benefit of the doubt, as many are taught to shake a woman's hand differently, there's no excuse if he shakes another man's hand like that, though. I've had one guy flat out refuse to shake my hand properly, so I flat put refused to acknowledge his existence.

I tend to follow a woman's lead on the handshake. If she presents her hand palm down, she's not going to give a real handshake and I'm not going to force her to. I definitely prefer a real handshake though.

If someone grabs my fingers, I'll pull away and try again. If they don't let go, I'll grab their wrist with my other hand and make them understand that I'm not a limp-wristed fish-hand shaker.
