A smaller 6 running around sniffing too. I say we are still in active rut. They are not interested in corn. Which is even better now that I hear the oil field guys on the workover rig about a mile frommme

Nice and cozy with my Dearborn heater. Dang fingers were hurtin after my .7 mile walk. So far I have seen a small doe and a barely legal 8 point. Rut might still be on. Not too sure, but the buck sure was playful, running up and down the field, then he'd pause and take off again.Originally posted by 2165 Turbo Rail View PostDamn that's cold. Hope you have a heater haha

Atleast you guys have a blind. I'll be laying prone on a hill. Good luck everyone.

Damn I feel like shit, but I'm here at the lease. Headed to the blind. Heart shot only for me.

I would not consider following a blood trail thru the woods for 40-50 yards tracking.......Originally posted by Yale View PostFuck tracking deer if you don't have to. If it goes very far, you didn't kill it clean.

you are "supposed to" shoot right behind the shoulder (basically hoping to hit the heart)Originally posted by Rafa View PostSo being a 1st timer, do I aim at neck or at shoulder? I see you all talking about damaged meat. I've read that it's best to shoot at shoulder.

Fuck tracking deer if you don't have to. If it goes very far, you didn't kill it clean.Originally posted by MstangsBware View PostI did for a couple of seasons in a row....Cull bucks I would shoot neck and does would be head shots. This left all the meat unharmed and made for a much easier clean. All these shots would be done within 50 yards or so at the most. Of corse it took them staright down which kind of took away from following a nice blood trail...Nothing like a nice blood trail to follow that leads to your kill.....

Phillips county.
I also don't do leased or guided hunts yet. One day I hope to do a few. Not in the next few years. I've got 4 or 5 good deer. Kansas good deer. Mostly big 8's and a couple nice 10's. The 8's are young.
I want to bring the heard numbers up. It's been hit hard the passed few years by my fathers friends. The shoot from the truck type.

I've got 1500 acres in kansas and refuse to shoot a buck with a rifle here. It's to easy.
