I had a dog years ago we simply could not afford the treatment. She lived on another 13 years without any treatment. I finally had to put her down due to arthritis. She was probably 15-17 yo by then.

Wish I had read this a few months ago. I am in the middle of doing a heartworm treatment for my Doberman (sort of a rescue) and am in to it at least 2k already. I would probably have opted for this if it was presented as a option. He was at a healthy weight before and showed no signs of coughing.

forgot to say also when I have him retested he always comes up heartworm negative after slow treatment. Decatur is a long haul but they are cheaper than any other vet I have found.

As someone who has been through this I can offer some insight. I have a chow mix who was heart worm positive. He had progressed to the point he would start coughing as he got worse. Which was about the time I found him since he was a stray. I took him to Decatur Animal clinic across from james wood and they suggested instead of doing the arsenic treatment which is really heard on the dog and the chance of survival was not the best, to put him on the slow kill method. That was 4 or 5 years ago now and he is still good. Best thing with the slow kill is it is way cheaper and not near as hard on the dog. It takes longer but the vet told me they had not lost any dogs since treating them that way.

Well it's been 3 years and I thought I'd post a update , the old fart is heart worm negative and still kicking . He's back up to 65 lbs and still getting around pretty good . I really want to thank everyone for the information and recommendations. With several phone calls to several vets we treated him with heartgaurd and meat . Kept him strong enough to outlive the worms and he made it!!!! To the people who offered financial assistance , thank you from the bottom of my families heart . I'm glad to say that through the efforts of this board his life was saved and we didn't require any donations.

My dog and I just wanted to say thank you for this.Originally posted by Leah View PostI had to treat a dog once for HW and used this vet for him. They are in Watauga and they let me pay them out on a plan so it wasn't so bad. Seemed they really had the animal's best interest in mind instead of how much $$ they were going to get.

We should be going to see them soon.

I don't know your vet, but I would not be happy about that at all. IMO, it's their job to make sure you are educated on the basics at least.Originally posted by Reefer Rae View PostI can't say I never saw a commercial . But yeah kinda frustrating.

Good too hear the dog is better and glad u didn't do the treatment. Boxers have very short life spans. I have had 8 in the last 25 years and only 3 have lived past ten. My brindle female got heartworms at 7 and the treatment killed her. This breed has all kinds of health problems but they are wonderful pets.
