So, following this train of thought. I see a man wearing a dark shirt and slacks with a firearm and other impliments that could cause me harm walking up to my door in a menacing manner (or my car). Since he is openly carrying a firearm and approaching me in what I surmise is a threatening manner, I have every right to open fire do I not?

You do not have to be bitten to believe you are in danger of bodily injury. You do not have to be shot at to use deadly force. I understand that some dog lovers will not get it. Not every one on this planet has the same same beliefs. We can agree to disagree. There are plenty of people out there that believe you should be able to move around in a public place without being charged by a dog in any manner. It sucks but it happened.

It is called the "Good Faith Exception". If the officer went to the house in "good faith" and made a mistake, it is/can be mitigated. A simple mistake led to a tragic event, and it cannot be taken back. I feel horrible for the owners (and the dog), but it happened. It's not like the officer found a house with a similar number, a dog, and thought "Oh geez, here's my chance" and shot the dog.

I hope the city tries to make this situation right. If it were my officer, I would go meet with them and offer an apology and explanation.

Good faith applies if a third party makes a mistake that the cop acts on. I have no idea what you are blabbering about here.

Man I don't even like dogs and know that this is a fucked up situation, you can argue the point all you want, but you will never get me to agree that cops have the right to go on someones private property and shoot their dogs.
Case in point my son decided to take a ride on his bike last week, he took a short cut through the McDermotts property and he started getting chased by a big dog, he kicked it into high gear and hauled ass aout of there. When he got home and told me the story, I told him that if the dog would took a chunck out if his ass, it was his fault for being on the dogs property and to not do it again.
