He's not living with us anymore, he would very rarely, if ever, need to transport anyone other than maybe my son so they can go somewhere.

also, i'm sure part of his responsibilities will include driving the other kids around, your kids. So you might want something a little safer, with more room.
just sayin

But for a full sized person, that thing is like driving a go cart

This.Originally posted by YOLO View PostI wouldn't get him a GT, if there was a remote chance I'd be paying insurance on it. Guaranteed doubling, possibly tripling household insurance rates for liability only? Fuuuuuuuuck that. And if he gets busted racing it (in what would constitute the absolute loosest sense of the term), enjoy SR-22 rates for a teenager. Get him a 4-banger, 4-door Accord or Camry. They are practical beyond man's understanding of the word. He can get his own toy when he can afford it.
Sidebar: make a condition of the free car that he has to pass the personal finance and intro to financial accounting courses on Coursera. That's what I'd do.
This.Originally posted by mustang_revival View PostRanger. Cheaper on Gas, ins, and cant bring a ton of people distracting him.
This has been addressed. He obviously didn't want to drive before now or he would have passed his classes.Originally posted by akfodysvn View PostPersonally I think you've punished him enough not letting him drive sooner, lol.

That's actually a really decent idea-he would have money left over to put subs/audio that he wants, pay for a year of insurance AND have some gas money left over. Plus, does it really get 35mpg in the city??????? Hell yes-I'd be sold on it.Originally posted by Baron View Post

My 94 tbi got 16 around town before I lifted it. My 2000 gets about the same.Originally posted by LaserSVT View PostBS on the mileage. Doing 250+ mile trips on the highway at the speed-limit (+/-5) nets me 16.2 on the highway. 1996, Vortec 350, 2WD, X-cab short-bed. And yes, the truck is running to perfection and maintained like crazy. In the city I see maybe 13.7 or so.
Full size trucks NEVER got near 20 MPG (gassers) until recently.

A mid 90s gm can be had for under 4k and are extremely reliable. Cheap parts when needed. Milage will 16-20 city/hwy.
I say 4wd because depending on where he is stationed it may be a good thing to have in the winters
Also I would get an ext cab. That way there's room to put gear out of the weather

Guest repliedOriginally posted by SN95Jones View PostI had a 99' F 150 ext. Cab 5.4L 2wd and loved it. Had 250K and not a damn thing was wrong with it. Everything worked perfectly, never had a light turn on the dash.
Wish I still had it and never traded it for my stang sometimes.
I'd be upset with myself for spending 9k on a 98 Gt too.
