I had a great uncle growing up that called everyone (mostly the kids) cotton-pickers, in a jovial way though. With a good chuckle and all "You little cotton-picker".. I had no idea it was a slur until I was an adult.

Then again, my mom's parents were from Arkansas, they and many in their family actually picked cotton back in the 20's and 30's.

my grandparents were from rural arkansas, and they had a bunch of kids so they could pick cotton. My grandmother would tell stories about school letting out during harvest because nobody showed up.
