Nuclear power and nuclear energy information. Climate change, sustainable development, uranium mining, enrichment, nuclear electricity generation, nuclear fuel management, recycling and disposal, World Nuclear Association (WNA) and World Nuclear News (WNN).

3 of 4 reactors now at cold shutdown despite failure of the main emergency core coolant systems. 4th reactor is now repaired and being cooled.

    But also:

BULLETIN: Fuel rods fully exposed again at Fukushima nuclear power plant: TEPCO
    TOKYO, March 15, Kyodo

Tokyo Electric Power Co. said Monday fuel rods were fully exposed again in the No. 2 reactor of the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant as of 11 p.m.

TEPCO said a steam vent of the pressure container of the reactor that houses the rods was closed for some reason, leading to a sudden drop in water levels inside the reactor.

Only if you're waiting for a new Krispy Kreme to open up. Though I guess this could also apply to the traffic. The main reason I laugh at "heavy" DFW traffic is because I used to live in Japan...

Weather agency warns of huge aftershock

Japan's Meteorological Agency has warned of a major aftershock within the next 3 days.

Agency officials told reporters that aftershocks with an intensity of 5 and over on the Japanese scale of zero to seven have been registered nearly 200 times since Friday, when northeastern Japan was rocked by a record earthquake.

The epicenters of the jolts cover an area 500 kilometers north to south, between the coasts of Iwate and Ibaraki, and 200 kilometers west to east.

Agency expert Takashi Yokota said the likelihood of a tremor measuring five or over within the next 3 days remains at 40 percent.

He said that if the focus is close to the epicenter of the initial earthquake, the aftershock may be from six minus to six plus and may trigger a tsunami.

There is a guy on the Yahoo finance boards that claims to have predicted the earth quake in Japan on the 8th of March and says its far from over. He says a major quake is going to hit the west coast of the U.S. or possibly Texas on 3/19 and this is just a run up to 12/21/12. His Yahoo ID is csaintswin if anyone is interested in giving him some shit.

Well, today we officially cancelled out trip. Miyako's family is safe but we don't want to be a burden to them. Also, all the grocery stores have empty shelves in Tokyo. It will be a few days before they start restocking. The aftershocks are still quite strong. Today Tokyo got hit with another 6.something. No damages or injuries but everyone is on edge. It would be pretty stupid to be a tourist in the midst of that...

Fortunately American Airlines credit all my wife's airline miles back to her account. They gave me a $1200 credit for my ticket but I have to spend $400 when I use that credit (what a load).

We're hoping that things will settle down so we can go visit Miyako's family in the fall. Meanwhile we have asked her Dad to go get a passport so they can fly to the US if something goes really bad. Her Mom already has a passport..
