  • The $0.05 subsonic .300blk round

I present to you... the result of a lot of time, tools, money, etc. etc.

A lot more work to come, but it is finally nice to have a finished example to start testing with.

Sure. I make the case from range pickup .223. The bullet is cast from wheel weights (thanks Randy!) into a 230gr spire point boat tail. I coat the projectile in hi-tek coating which eliminates smoke and bore/suppressor leading. They shoot and feel like jacketed bullets. Since they are subsonic I'm hoping I can shoot these soft, they are a 7 Brinell hardness. If they work and can hold a 2 MOA I'll be happy as hell. My only expense is my powder and my primer. With the round being subsonic, the powder is very slight and economical.

Retail subsonic is $30/box of 20, or $1.50 a round. I'm at a realistic $0.05-$0.07 per round with this or $1/box of 20. But, don't be fooled, it's a whole lot of work to get here.

Is the hi-tek coating similar to the powder coating the casting people are doing these days?

Yes, similar. powder coating is much more of a pain in the ass to do though. It was popular because the hi-tek liquid was more expensive, but that's since changed. For high volume, liquid is better. You still have to bake it on.

My barrel can't stabilize the bullets. 80% shoot straight, 20% scare the shit out of me hitting the target sideways (that's when I took the can off). The industry as a whole is switching to a 1:7 twist (I assume because of these heavy subsonic bullets). I'm going to try and harden my bullets more to see if I'm losing twist due to stripping the rifling. But more than likely I need to buy another barrel. The quest is ongoing. Accuracy was pretty good though (when they stabilized).
