Kentucky cop shoots off finger after gun store clerk hands him loaded weapon

WBKO-TV reported that former Officer Darrell Smith asked to see a .380 caliber handgun when he visited the Barren Outdoors in March, according to a lawsuit filed Friday.

The clerk retrieved a weapon from beneath the glass display counter and hands the gun to Smith, who was wearing his Glasgow police uniform at the time.

Security camera video shows Smith examining the weapon, which the officer does not realize is loaded.

He cocked the weapon, which then fired and blows off a portion of the officer’s left index finger.

“He’s permanently disfigured, he went through a lot of pain and suffering,” said his attorney, Alan Simpson. “He’s gone through several surgeries. He’s got a lot of medical bills that have to be paid. It ended his career and he’s going to have a lot of lost income.”

Cop should have cleared gun as part of his training and instincts I would suspect. But also how does a gun get loaded in store like that and why did the store clerk not clear gun first before handing over?

Lot of errors here, but gun shop should be held accountable.

Added safety measure.. Put enough pressure and it will keep the bullet from exiting the firearm! At least it works with Nerf guns... lol

Why? Officer Dumbass forgot to handle the gun in the proper manner as well.

Probably because they performed an illegal action with a loaded firearm in a store handed to a customer. The officer is indeed a dumb ass, but he's not legally required to double check the firearm he was handed.

He deserves to have his finger shot off, the store deserves to lose a lot of money. I just don't think the cop deserves to receive that money.

When I worked at a gun store. First thing we did is lock the slide back. Visually and physically inspect the chamber before handing it to a customer.

Now as a customer. I always check the chamber when handling A firearm handed to me by a sales person. It's just common sense. Both the clerk in the cop should have checked the chamber. Even though you would never expect to be given a loaded weapon at a store.

Clerk is as much to blame as the badge who forgot basic handgun safety.
