  • Has anyone had LASIK redone?

I'm experiencing some degradation in my long distance vision and it is probably due to my LASIK being 9 years old.

My question is has anyone had touch up LASIK, and is it worth it, and how long does it typically last?

I'm interested in the answer, too. Also, is that the typical time frame for the correction to last? I'm interested in having the surgery, but VERY apprehensive. I am a pilot for a living, and a screwed up surgery could and that.

I've talked to some people at work who have had some loss in quality from 5-9 years. I only talked to one person who has had it more than 10 years with no loss of quality.

So, it's looking like I'm the norm. I knew it was too good to last..

I spend ~$750 on glasses a year, so when lasik gets cheaper than that factoring in the degradation, let me know. The good part, my vision isn't changing anymore, the bad part, my vision is fucking terrible now.

          I paid $1,800 for LASIK in 2002.

That's $200/year. I have not been back to an optometrist since my LASIK (I know, I should have gone yearly), and that has saved me at least $900 ($100/visit).

In the last year you've spent about $6,750 on glasses.

I think it's safe to say you would save a ton of money on LASIK.

The Lasik correction of the cornea is permanent. However, with age your eyes change. You can opt for another Lasik procedure after the ophthalmologist determines the underlying cause first. I have a cataract in my right eye, but since I still see 20/15 20/20, my ophthalmologist will not remove it. And that's fine and understandable. As I don't even notice unless I look at a brightly lit bulb or light source, then I see a glare/small halo. This and my occasional migraine events causes me to have accommodation issues. Where I can't refocus looking up after reading and am temporarily nearsighted. Or vice versa. I'm in my 30s and my Doc says this is an issue that is normal with age or people taking certain medications, like antihistamines. No glasses or surgical correction necessary at the moment as it's a infrequent symptom. Unfortunately, when you get in your 40s/50s your eyes under go a lot of natural degenerative changes associated with age. Mainly due to weakening of the eye muscles and loss of flexibility of the lens itself. Therefore, my personal opinion would be to talk to your ophthalmologist and discuss other alternatives to a 2nd Lasik procedure. Because your eyes are going to start to weaken at a more rapid pace beyond your 40s. The 2nd procedure may not even last you 9 years like the 1st one did. And, therefore, not really be worth the risks and post operative discomfort of the procedure. Which might be greater since you are now 10 years older and doing it for a 2nd time.

            My 2 cents....

I'm pretty sure that Barbie had LASIK, but anyway-whatever she had done she has had it redone.

Haven't had any problems with mine yet. I'm at the 6 year mark. Hopefully that continues to be the case. Still probably the best money I've spent on anything in my life.

My wife is 30 and Lasik is something I would like to do for her within the next year. I would be quit ticked off though that if in 10 years she would have to go back to contacts or glasses again.
Fuck you. We're going to Costco.

It's just a fact of life. Even breast implants have to be redone every so many years.

The place Barbie had hers done offered a 'free lifetime touch up' plan (which she got). Hers re-do's haven't cost her anything extra. That might be something for you to look into if that is a concern.

I probably need to get checked, i've noticed some issues at night, driving.

But I'm about 10 years in, and I'd say still 90%.

Hands down the best money i've spent on anything. But it was my understanding during Dr. Tylock's talks that you can't stop your eyes from changing, and that there would always be a possibility of needing glasses or a re-do in the future.

6 years for me, too and I agree on money well spent.

That's the deal, though. When we hit 40, our eyes start going back the other way (when you have to use reading glasses or move smaller print farther away to read it). Tylock hooked me up and told me they'd have a procedure by the time I'm 40 to help with that as well. I'm 36 now, and if I'm not mistaken, there's already a procedure to correct that as well
