  • Use credit card to pay bills?

Do any of you use a credit card to pay routine monthly bills?

I'm considering doing it to get the rewards. We currently use a Citi AA card and we get airline miles. I know some companies won't let you use a credit card to pay a bill but there are plenty that will.

Aside from the obvious need to set aside money to pay the cc bill each month, are there any real cons to using a credit card to pay bills?

We don't carry a balance so I won't be paying interest.

I use a Capital One Quicksilver card to pay the cable bill, car insurance, my Google account, Netflix and some other stuff. I usually get about $10 a month back from normal transactions. Better than nothing.

I pay all my bills with credit cards accept ones that do not accept it. I pay them off the day before they are do so I can get the rewards points and not have it on my credit. Its great if you stay on top of it. I fucked up last month and missed a payment and got charged $80 in fees :| Moved that over to automatic payment. We even buy our groceries on credit cards.

It also has the impact of increasing my available credit on each card too because they are actually being used which I guess they like. I didnt have credit until my late 20s so i'm pretty far behind. Some of my cards were $500 limits when i opened them 4 years ago and are now $10k - $20k. I bought a car on one over the summer.

I have around 25k worth of charges a month. It is an extra perk to get $500 or so cash back a month.

Yes. There are many reason why using a credit card is superior to using a debit card. Also, there is no need to wait till your statement cuts to pay the bill. I make numerous payments a month when I get paid.

Make sure you know whether your card charges interest on ending balance or on average daily balance. Some cards, like our Chase card (which we don't use anymore for this exact reason), charge interest on an average daily balance, so even if you pay it off the day before it's due, you get an interest charge when the month rolls over.

                  Dave Ramsey does not approve.
