they aren't as gruesome as i first imagine. it's not good but it could have been worse 1 second later or a few inches to the left.
i think they help paint the picture however, hopefully there is something to be learned.

That video is hard to watch.
Felipe Massa was screaming on the radio that they should've stopped the race in the last 5 laps. If I remember watching the race it was a couple of laps until they brought out the safety car.
Agreed on JB, he got screwed by the safety car. Probably at the minimum he had a podium finish.

Update on Bianchi: the report about him breathing on his own was incorrect. he is on life support. he is critical but stable.
Marussia drivers parents confirm their son sustained a diffuse axonal injury; Bianchi in intensive care after hitting recovery vehicle at Suzuka; F1 drivers and team carry messages of support in Russia
as far as the incident: there was a local double yellow but the safety car was not released for sutil's incident, but rather after bianchi's.
without a SC in those conditions, it was dangerous for the marshalls to recover sutil's car and the drivers. it was simply a bad move and should never be repeated. it's easy in hindsight to say there should have been an SC but i truly expected an SC after sutil went off. i didnt expect a red flag or anything but just an SC.
i think FIA said it was within a lap of sutil that they released the SC but i think it was more like 3. i can rewatch later to verify. i was paying close attention to button this race and he dived into the pits for wets immediately after sutil's incident. clearly he/mclaren/I thought an SC car was in the works and everyone would dive in for full wets. it never came (well it did, but not for sutil).
not that it matters, but JB almost won that race (if they ended early due to red flagged) but he got screwed by where the SC picked him up.

From what I gathered last night is the FIA and Bernie asked about a possible move in race time to earlier in the day to perhaps even on Saturday. The circuit said no due to Honda saying that it would affect the fans.
They should've just made this a 40 lap race, and then perhaps had the safety car come out once suitil spun out.

Damn...I'm sure he was also hoping to impress this race in hopes of moving to the ferrari side. After their experience with massa...you have to think a head injury will make them reconsider.
I hope he pulls through and comes back stronger.

^ that was the last official statement from the FIA about 2 hours ago.
Still it was music to my ears to wake up and know the dude wasn't DOA.
Newest update from what should be a reliable source:
L'Equipe is reporting that Bianchi's surgery is over and he is not under respiratory assistance. #F1 #LWYBF

Chaos in the race but that's not what's important right now nor is the result.
There was an incident with the Marrusia of Jules Bianchi and possibly striking the JCB recovering sutil's sauber. Curtains, stretcher, ambulance and rushed to med center. Condition is unknown.
Hope it's not what it looks like. Everything has gone grim.
Update: said to be "unconscious" and taken to hospital. Helicopter could not fly under conditions.Last edited by momo; 10-05-2014, 02:31 AM.

Really wish the organizers would have bumped the race up as offered by FIA. I like a good rain mix-up as much as the next guy, but F1 journos on twitter are painting a pretty nasty picture.
