Once again, because Beltre is such a big step up? They both made 19 errors last year, Beltre just had a few more opportunities (.957 fielding percentage vs .950). Beltre has never had a season with a fielding percentage above .978; Young's career average is .978. He's not a third baseman, but he doesn't suck as much as everybody wants to make him out to.

There's plenty of depth at the first base position. Moreland is defensively competent enough and his bat makes Davis look like a little leaguer. Young will figure it out and Napoli can fill in when necessary.

Pitching is the essence of the moment for the Rangers and they're out of options. Their minor league pitching staff has been among the deepest in baseball for several years and this is what it's there for.

So the improvements he made in the offseason and his performance in spring training amounts to nothing? That's where guys like him get their shot. And he was nothing short of impressive. This isn't like football, with a 16 game season and every game is critical. And I get that they are flat out desperate when it comes to pitching. I just don't see what it's going to hurt giving the kid a shot. I think his spring training performance has earned him the chance.
