This isn't a conservative flagship program, it's a liberal program. So yes, they will lie to defend it because it is in their common interest. Social programs are plagued with a history of mismanagement, misdirection, and inaccurate projections. Just look at Obamacare - originally it was projected to be this amazing cost savings - the moment they voted on it, suddenly the figures were updated and it's astronomically more expensive than our current system. Same thing. All parties lie, but when it comes to flagship programs you have to look at history.
