Update: Solyndra announces it plans to file Chapter 11 bankruptcy, is suspending operations and seeks a reorganization. Click here for the company's full statement.

Solyndra, a major manufacturer of solar technology in Fremont, has shut its doors, according to employees at the campus.

"I was told by a security guard to get my [stuff] and leave," one employee said. The company employs a little more than 1,000 employees worldwide, according to its website.

Shortly after it opened a massive $700 million facility, it canceled plans for a public stock offering earlier this year and warned it would be in significant trouble if federal loan guarantees did not go through.

The company has said it will make a statement at 9am California time, though it's not clear what that statement will be. An NBC Bay Area photographer on the scene reports security guards are not letting visitors on campus. He says "people are standing around in disbelief." The employees have been given yellow envelopes with instructions on how to get their last checks.

Solyndra was touted by the Obama administration as a prime example of how green technology could deliver jobs. The President visited the facility in May of last year and said "it is just a testament to American ingenuity and dynamism and the fact that we continue to have the best universities in the world, the best technology in the world, and most importantly the best workers in the world. And you guys all represent that. "

The federal government offered $535 million in low cost loan guarantees from the Department of Energy. NBC Bay Area has contacted the White House asking for a statement.

Some Republicans have been very critical of the loans. "I am concerned that the DOE is providing loans and loan guarantees to firms that aren't capable of competing in the global market, even with government subsidies" Florida Congressman Cliff Stearns told the New York Times.

Solyndra, VeraSun, Pacific Ethanol, Central Illinois Energy Co-op...and many more to come. Why? Because the price of corn. Why? Because of ethanol production. All of these plants were heavily subsidized with OUR tax dollars, too. They still couldn't make it. Ethanol (from corn) in mass quantities, does not work. All things considered, it's a joke.

Hey, its not his money. That money is there for him to use, right? I mean after all, he's the president isn't he? What else is he supposed to do but decide how to spend the government's money? These are the thoughts that likely pass through his monkey brain.

First line in the budget deficit reduction program should be to revoke Obama's credit card or break the hand that signs checks.

Even the greatest advocate for ethanol, the almighty AlGore, said that he was wrong and only supported ethanol production to further the state he then represented.

Thank you for providing it here. Solyndra is a California-based solar panel producer. A federally guaranteed loan of $535 million was a serious part of the investment that permitted the company to grow. However, the glow did not last long because this week, Solyndra announced that they will be declaring bankruptcy. Furthermore, it is still not clear what portion of Solyndra’s more than $1 billion debt the federal government may be responsible for paying. The federal loan guarantee was for $535 million. It will not be until after Solyndra’s bankruptcy hearings, at which the government will be represented, that the exact responsibility of the government will be understood. What is known for sure is that this guarantee will put taxpayers on the hook for several million dollars.

Mark Levin had a caller say she worked at Solyndra (he later confirmed off air she worked there). She said everyone in the plant knew that there was a plant in China making the same solar panels cheaper then Solyndra could. She also said most people knew it was only a matter of time till he place shut down.

I thought I would bring this thread back up since they are starting to have a hearing.

Again it's the old "Brother In Law" deal. Get your guy in charge of the tax payer's check book, and then funnel money to your bogus company that is run by your worthless brother in law. You then get your big kick back and the company goes belly up. What a deal for you. The brother in law makes out pretty good too.
