REPORTS: Marines not permitted live ammo

U.S. Marines defending the American embassy in Egypt were not permitted by the State Department to carry live ammunition, limiting their ability to respond to attacks like those this week on the U.S. consulate in Cairo.

Ambassador to Egypt Anne Patterson “did not permit US Marine guards to carry live ammunition,” according to multiple reports on U.S. Marine Corps blog spotted by Nightwatch. “She neutralized any US military capability that was dedicated to preserve her life and protect the US Embassy.”

If true, the reports indicate that Patterson shirked her obligation to protect U.S. interests, Nightwatch states.

One of my good friends who was a MSG (Marine Security Guard) at a consulate that only had 8 of them total, said they contracted with the local Militia in the country they were in (Kurgystan not sure if I spelled that right) and if the alarm were raised the local Militia would show up to support them.

He said they didn't even wear blues when on duty at the front desk (only one of them at a time would be on duty at the desk) or nearly anywhere else unless there was something special going on. They would wear plain old business suits like what you see the stereotypical Secret Service folks in.

I missed a MSG duty over a 6 month Med float. A buddy from HS that joined with me did a MSG tour in Spain.

Coincidentally he worked on the US Embassy upgrade in Cairo as a civilian contractor for 6 months just a couple years ago.

The MEU in the area should have dropped every Marine off the boat to take up residence around the burned up embassy for a few weeks just egging the locals into another round.

President Obama claims Libyan security forces fought beside Americans against attackers on Tuesday, but a Libyan official says they gave up consulate personnel to the Islamists who murdered them.

Libya's Deputy Interior Minister Wanis al-Sharif says the consulate's security forces moved Ambassador Christopher Stevens and other personnel to a second, safer building once the attacks began. But, he continues, the security forces told the attackers which building Stevens was hiding in, effectively handing him over.

According to Sharif, the attackers coming against the US embassy were "more heavily armed than the Libyan security personnel who were assigned to protect the U.S. Consulate."
