I'm surprised you didn't stick around to get that degree in TV/VCR repair...

Exactly. My dad flew fighter jets in the Marine Corps for 12 years, then got a job with Delta back in '88. Early retired in '05 to protect what little of his pension he could before they filed bankruptcy. They screwed him hard in bankruptcy. That is something you union hacks should remember if you're counting on a big defined benefit pension to be there in 20 years. Save some money on the side. The way the 'right to work' movement is headed, you guys could be in deep kimshe.

So, can I see a raise of hands on whether anybody on this board would want to be on a plane when something goes wrong piloted by an inexperienced, 500 hour, $50k year pilot versus a pilot like Sully Sullenberger with tens of thousands of hours and 30 years of experience who makes $200k when the plane loses all power just after take-off? That's what I thought.

How many of you train monkeys have to get a physical every six months where if you don't pass, you may not have a job the next day?

How many of you train monkeys have up to 300 lives in the back and a $50+ million dollar jet to keep in the air where if you screw up due to gross negligence, an entire corporation could go down and hundreds of people die making international news?

How many of you train monkeys had to either spend tens of thousands of dollars getting pilot training, working for a crappy regional carrier making $12/hr for several years or flying jets in the military before you could get your train job?

That's what I thought, so STFU.

                  • That is why we are paid half as much as a pilot. We are half as smart as a monkey. Either way a monkey could do both jobs. We just have to be sober enough to blow the horn threw the crossings where the shit faced drunk pilots who are trying to finger fuck the flight attendants can kick back and let the plane take over. As far as people lives I guess a pilot is no different than a gray hound bus driver.

I haven't (and won't) belittle anyone's livelihood on this board. I happen to know that train engineers also have a ton of responsibility, especially if shit goes wrong. As a layman to both career paths, the biggest difference I can see, is when a train engine breaks, you can always get out and walk. A pilot and his passengers don't have that option.

                      • My dad made closer to $300-350k/yr the last few years up to retirement with green slips (last minute trip requests) and other odds and ends, so you probably make quite a bit less than half that. That said, that kind of pilot pay is more of a rarity nowadays due to all the industry crap that has happened over the past several years

I'm not saying all train jockeys are idiots and all pilots are geniuses, but the averages are dramatically higher on education, training, flight physical requirements, risk factors, etc. for pilots hence the reason they are paid quite a bit more than a train jockey.

                        • I did union work at power plant projects that my dad managed for a construction company. I was a member of three different unions--boilermaker, bricklayer, and laborer. It was a good way to earn some money between school years. During high school, I hauled hay and mowed yards and the harder I worked the more money I made. That is not the case with unions.

I was surprised at the amount of money I made versus the work I had to do. If I tried to work hard, I would receive some "education". The union veterans would tell me to slow down or I was going to work my self out of a job. I found out later that wasn't true. They just didn't want to look bad in comparison. Truth is that the construction company and the labor union had an agreement that at least one labor union had to be present on each shift. I was guaranteed a job no matter what my effort was.

You couldn't help anybody either. On one job I was working as a laborer. We were removing panels from a heat exchanger. Only boilermakers could be in the heat exchanger. I couldn't even reach into there. They told me that if they needed someone to hand it to, then they would tell the construction company to bring another boilermaker. Once the panels hit the grating, they belonged to the laborers. I could then carry them to a 55 gallon drum but I couldn't put them in it. Only boilermakers could do that. The panels were then responsibility of the operators union. After they hit the ground, they were once again "property" of the labor union. There was always people standing around not doing anything. What a joke!

I could go on and on about the quality of the workers, what my dad had to do to make sure his company made money, etc. There was a place for unions when there were sweat shops in the US, safety issues in the workplace, and truly poor wages but with OSHA, wage laws, etc., they are not needed. Only thing they are good for now is ruining businesses.
