How do they know it's illegal? I'm not trying to bait you. New Jersey has scary strict gun laws, and well intentioned people have gotten arrested and imprisoned for being in possession of guns that were illegal. You can't even possess hollow-point ammunition in that state.

A guy a while back had two pistols, and some hollow point ammo in his trunk while he was moving out of his parents' house, and his mom called him in. He got 10 years.

Surely there's more to that story, I highly doubt that he was a "good kid" just moving away to college. The simple way around that is not to own any illegal weapons or ammo.

In New York or Jersey this summer there was a military guys PCSing. He had his guns locked up and ammo separated but still got arrested. He was passing through one state to another. Got pulled over did the right thing told the cops he had guns in the car. Boom Jail.

He bought the pistols in Colorado, while he was a resident there. He got divorced and moved back into his parents' house in NJ. He had an argument with his mother while moving out, and she called the cops. She claimed he was a danger to himself, because he was upset after getting divorced. He had the guns unloaded, with the magazines and ammo in different containers from the pistols.

A few months ago, I saw a video about Cory Brooker and the crap he went through running against that convict for New Jersey mayor. I thought he was an okay guy until this video. I understand them wanting to get guns away from criminals. However, the bounty program is going to cause hell for a lot of innocent people.
