Police investigating Morrissey’s ties to teen girl

Del. Joseph D. Morrissey, D-Henrico, a lightning rod for controversy in his long political and legal career, is under investigation by Henrico County police in connection with his involvement with a teenage girl from Chesterfield County.

Henrico Commonwealth’s Attorney Shannon Taylor acknowledged Wednesday that Morrissey, himself a former chief prosecutor in the city of Richmond, is under investigation, but she declined to provide further comment because the matter involves a juvenile and because no charges have been brought in the case.

Sources close to the investigation said Henrico police were summoned to a residence Morrissey owns near Virginia Center Commons on Friday night and were able to locate a teen from Chesterfield. Officers took the girl to her father, who was waiting nearby.

No other details were made public Wednesday night, and Morrissey did not respond to requests for comment. His law partner, Paul Goldman, said he has not been in contact with Morrissey for two weeks, a situation he said is not uncommon because the two lawyers, who formed a partnership last year, are involved in different aspects of the law.

Morrissey, 56, has been a puzzle in many aspects of his legal and political career, drawing widespread attention recently when he displayed an assault-style rifle on the floor of the House of Delegates.

He was Richmond commonwealth’s attorney from 1989 to 1993 and was elected to the House of Delegates in 2007, serving Charles City County and portions of Henrico and Prince George counties and the city of Hopewell.

Morrissey’s license to practice law was revoked in 2003 but reinstated by the state Supreme Court in 2011 after a long fight on his part.

Morrissey has been open about some aspects of his private life, acknowledging that he has never married but has three children, the oldest of whom is in her 20s.

Taylor declined to say how long the police investigation is expected to take.
