Wood Floors

Anyone got any tips for refinishing wood floors? Nothing special. It's that 2" by whatever shit that got out in houses in the 40s.

I'm guessing renting a big sander, stain, and seal. But anything else to keep in mind??

You're alot braver than I am. I don't think I would gamble my wood floors on trying to save a few bucks. You have any idea how many times they've been redone? I know that matters when it comes time to sanding and how much wood you have left before you start hitting nails.

No clue. Old house. I know that they were done atleast once.

They're just scratched and worn out.

Guess I'm not really looking to redo them, just make them look less shitty.

Maybe some palm sanders to get corners. And a shop vac to clean it all up, maybe a leaf blower to get the seams.

I would just rent a sander and do work. Using a vacuum with a brush attachment to cleans the seams and corners wouldn't stir up as much dust while cleaning up.

Get a couple of good punches and be sure all the nails are countersunk really good. Be careful with drum sanders, because they remove material REALLY fast. A big buffer with a sanding head on it is easier to gauge, but requires a little practice to control.

So what would be best for just small scratches (see nothing deep or gouged) and worn spots?

If you're sanding, all of that should clean up. If not, you can use wood filler on the deep gouges. If it's that bad, I wouldn't go for a "new" look anyway.

Depending on how big the room is, I'd prefer to take my time with a palm/orbital sander. It's a lot more forgiving than a big industrial/belt sander.

I bought a big unfinished dining table one time and stained it myself. After the first round, I didn't like the color so I sanded it off far enought to restain it a different color. It was a piece of cake with a palm sander and about 3 different grits.

As far as the floor, double check on the polyurethane you go with, I don't think the normal minwax stuff is made for heavy traffic.
