Pretty well, but it's going to take a little time to establish and I think it will also depend on how close you plant them together. They're sold like this:

The vines grow outward faster than upward and get all tangled up with each other to form this:

I've got a couple of large patches of it underneath some trees and it does great in the shade and maintenance is minimal. You can keep it low and just mow over it on the highest setting or let it grow taller and maintain it with the string trimmer, which is what I do. I think it's best to separate it from the adjacent grass with some form of border, like the green or brown metal landscape edging.

Nope, not with the new adjustments.

No watering with an irrigation system between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m.
    • No use of water that allows runoff or other water waste
    • No landscape watering during any form of precipitation
    • No hydro seeding, hydro mulching or sprigging
    • 30-day exemptions for watering new turf are only allowed for new construction.
    • No turf watering with hand-held hoses, soaker hoses or drip irrigation systems

Mckinney is currently on stage 3, water every other week. So any suggestions on what I can do on the cheap to get something growing?

Have you thought about cutting some branches off the tree, maybe some dead one and open it up for sun to pass.

I had the same problem at a rent house. I never tried a shade specific grass. I had some st augustine around the edges but it would never spread into the areas that were dense shade.

This was under two big established pecan trees. Sun was minimal, early morning and a couple of rays that broke through the canopy late in the day
