Cool deal! I'm in a split between USMMA, A&M, and Colorado School of Mines. I'm really leaning towards the Merchant Marine Academy, due to the incredible amount of options upon graduation and only having to go reserve.

          Yeah, congrats!

That said, I always hated when we had cadets rotate through when I was on active duty. Most of those dudes were total pricks.

            Chili,

When I was at Ft. Knox we ended up mowing their "hiking path" which I always thought was funny.

            Coley,

Congrats to you and your son, I hope his experience at the SLE program is everything he could hope for!

He is still really excited about it, and he is real happy that one of his good friends also got into SLE. Unfortunately it looks like I will not be able to get off to take him myself, but my brother lives in Albany and will more then likely take him for us.

I assume that's the Naval Academy? Hell yeah, that's awesome!

                      How old is your son?
Don't worry about what you can't change.
Do the best you can with what you have.

My son was tracking for a spot in Colorado Springs, but the more we learned, the better off he'd end up with a regular 4 year college and ROTC. You give up a ton of your fun years in a military academy as opposed to going to the school of your choice and only needing to ROTC your last couple of years.

He is 17 (yes I am old). I understand where you are coming from Denny, but my son is a real type A personality and it is the type of structure he thrieves on.

That's what we were told and he can still benefit from it. We have many commissioned officers in our family and several friends. ALL the ones that went through a service academy said they would ROTC if they had the opportunity to do it again. Don't get me wrong, it's a totally badass feat to achieve, as I know all that's involved (even just the prerequisites). My 18 year old has satisfied almost all of it, including a promise of Congressional recommendation, but he has recently chose to ROTC because he can choose the school he wants, the degree plan he wants and still come up with the same end product when all is said and done. He's even enlisting so he can start in his career field while going through school. Of course, he'll start off as an E3, but it is just the path he chose given all the options.
