Anyone running Rotella 5w40 t6 oil in the winter?

Just curious if anyone was doing this in place of their 20w40/50 oils

it's not a true synthetic. i run rotella 15w40 year 'round in my bandit. it's a diesel oil, lot's of zinc, non energy conserving (for those wet clutches) and it's dirt cheap.

my bike is oil cooled and has 50k+ miles so i need to trust the oil i run.

imo, it doesnt get cold enough around here for a 5w, but yes, that would be fine.

I have seen the reports. I believe I will stick to the 15w40 as well. I am too much of a candy ass to ride in real cold weather. (below 40) Like you said, at $13.00/gallon it would be better to change more often then go longer between oil changes for 3 times the cost.

for sure. my service manual recommends oil every 3k miles and a filter every other change.

i change oil every 2500 miles and filter every time, but my bike doesnt get ridden quite so nicely.

that's $25 an oil change with a gallon of rotella and a wix filter, and i put less than 15k on my bike a year.

now, rear tires are a different story, FUCK i burn those up quick.

I've been running Mobil 1(10w40 I think) that they sell at Walmart in the 5 gallon jugs for years.....bash me if you want...but I ride my bike nearly daily whether its hot or cold and so far have racked up 86k miles.

No bashing here. Ran regular oil in all my dirt bikes, never had an issue. I still think jaso ma is marketing hype. That is a lot of miles in the saddle

i'm looking at UOA reports from 2009-13 for rotella t 15w40, and i'm seeing anywhere from 900-1300 ppm of zinc.

i'll be sending in a sample of my own at my next oil change. will post up results

It used to be double that amount before. 900ish is the epa limit. The change came about when the diesel particulate mufflers became mandatory on new trucks.

good to know...guess i need to pick up some zddp additive, or do you know of any good oils for bikes that aren't $8+ a quart? i dont care how good amsoil and the like is, i dont like going past 3k miles.

i need a 10w30 at a minimum. prefer coventional

We use the mobil1 4t racing synthetic. It is, unfortunately $10/qt, but zinc and phosphorous is over 1250 ppm. Its easy to buy at oreillys or autozone. Problem with conventional oils and bike temp ranges, is the ash. Synthetic will help keeping the ash out of oil, conventional oil in a race application, we throw away everytime it gets to temp and cools down.
