Started on the body mounts today. Got the fronts loosely fabbed and the next to last in the rear fabbed and tacked in place. Once I get everything fabbed and tacked I'll take the body off and finish weld everything and remove all the ancillary brackets and mounts I won't need. It doesn't sit too high off of the frame like I was afraid it would, so it should be mounted very solidly when it's finished and gussetted.

Gasoline powered vehicles. Diesel powered vehicles and motorcycles are exempt from emissions testing, but are still required to have the annual safety inspection.
Vehicles 2 through 24 years old OR upon expiration of the two-year initial inspection sticker.

no, but unfortunately he is right. Keeping it all legal will only make life easier down the road. You might get lucky with some inspectors and then you might not.lol As stated many times I am looking forward to the finished truck too!

That thing is going to be cool when your done. If it was me I would use the vin on the body and get antique tags and live happily ever after without worrying about inspection or registration. I drive an 83 jeep all over the place with antique tags and have yet to be questioned, it has a 350 chevy in it and I have no idea what year the motor is from.

It will be registered as a classic. The vin follows the body, not the frame, so the DMV will have no issues with registering it as a 1972 Chevy Suburban. As far as emissions, it won't even matter that it is a diesel, it will be old enough to be exempt and tagged as a classic.

Looks good grimp. Do you think that body mount is going to stay rigid? Looks like it might bow in under a lot of use.

Yeah, I read his thread when I first got the burb. He went with a cummins in the original frame lots of work, but a great project.

I looked at putting the dmax in the original frame, but I knew I wanted 3/4ton capabilities, and would have had to modify the shit out of the frame. Figured it would be easier and more cost beneficial to put mod the body to fit a newer frame. Plus I get to reap the benefits of 30+ years of engineering in the suspension, steering, and frame design.

Have you seen the guy on there that is making a Tahoe out of his burb?

I haven't seen that one yet...I'll go look it up. Agree with your direction too BTW - great idea to incorporate more than just the newer drivetrain with the old look. Honestly seems it would be way easier to adapt the body rather than everything else. This is a great project!
