    FF to 0:40

I'm certainly no pilot but it looked like an elevator was stuck.

Yep, Jimmy Leeward and "Galloping Ghost". Received a text message from a friend who took his famly out for the races. Said they were lucky not to have been injured. The text was sent about an hour ago and he said that there were at least 12 killed and many of the others were extremely critical.

Thoughts and prayers to the familys

If it was a p-51 that is very sad . Its sad for the loss of the pilot also but that plane is a piece of history .

Yep...stalled the inner wing tip and rolled it right into the ground.

Has anyone seen which aircraft it was or who the pilot was? I met a lot of those guys back when they ran at Grayson county airport when I was like 15 years old. Only thing I saw was in the comments that the pilot was 80 years old? The second angle shot looks like he blacked out, tried climbing and rolled over instead. Probably hit the ground at over 400mph....

Sad and hope the spectators who were injured pull through.

it was Galloping Ghost that went down

    P-51D-15NA
    Serial Number: 44-15651
Highly Modified for the unlimited class. Wing span was shortened ten feet from the factory length. Stall speed was increased to around 160 knots. Boil off cooling is used to eliminate the air scoop. Engine jacket water and oil cooler radiators are submerged in a mixture of water and methanol. The steam vents from the round ports just aft of the wing root in the photos. Uses one gallon of boil off liquid for each gallon of fuel burned. Canapoy size was also greatly reduced
Pilot was 80 yr old Jimmy Leeward. Apparently he called a mayday and pulled up and out of the race (signaling mechanical problems) before turning over and diving.

The impact was well inside the box seat area and looked like it left a crater at least 10 feet across

It hit a portion of the stands, and some 50 people are dead. Horrible accident.
