It is way more common than you think, but, you must take into account stall/transmission, dyno, heat soak, etc. with a lot of these numbers. I've seen a car dyno lower 800's through a C4 and run mid 8's.

It is really but a number, but for a lot of those guys it is ego bruising as they won't ever see rubber on the strip.

but i also understand my buddy up in jersey just got his stroked LS1 (383) with a bunch of stock parts (stock=LS6 heads/intake, aftermarket cam) and saw 499 to the tire.

A friend of mine brought his Shelby GT500 to a Camaro Dyno day and much to the chagrin of the Chebby guys, put down 645 RWHP.

I believe it's an 07 with the Kenne Bell 2.8 and no other mods. He has the exhaust, but has not installed it.

The car has 10k on the clock.

The even funnier part is how many people don't understand how bad a converter will hose dyno numbers.

For example, my old truck put down 240rwhp - but it ran 7.40's. My current truck put down 257rhwp and runs 8.0's on the SAME dyno.

I'm sure there are only a couple in the dfw area that make 650rw, still have stock wheels, are white with blue stripes, and are owned by someone who would actually take it to a dyno day.
