I've been looking for a clean lower mileage tdi for commuting to south Texas and back every week. So far they are either over priced or ragged to hell. Nice find.
Nice looking car. Watch the timing belt and the electrical systems. Good call on avoiding the TDI, my sister had nothing but trouble with her Bettle TDI.
I've been looking for a little commuter car for the past few weeks...started looking at Hondas & VW's, then started leaning more towards Jetta's & Golf's b/c I thought I wanted a TDI....however I soon realized that everyone seems to want a lot more for the diesels so I decided to stick with a gasser instead.
I located this one last weekend over at Hiley...really clean little car that someone traded in on a new one just a few days prior. They were great to deal with, put it on a lift for me and all, and they made a good cash deal on it too.
It's a 1.8 Turbo with a 5-spd. Has a clean history and they even had a lot of the service records on it too. I was really looking for something stock, but turns out this one had a few mods on it...obviously the 17" BBS Wheels, also has like new Firehawks on it, Koni coilovers, a cold air intake, catback exhaust, strut tower brace, and a nice Kenwood head unit with DVD, GPS, Satellite, etc. The stereo sounds great in it...I assume it must have some after market speakers too, but haven't pulled a panel to look yet.
Only things I don't care for.....the exhaust is a little louder than my taste..it's not fart-can loud or anything, but I'd just prefer it to be quiet like stock. It also has a pretty firm ride, but the Koni's are adjustable so I'm going to pull it in this weekend, soften up the dampers and maybe raise it a little to see if that helps.
I want to try to locate the PO so that I can ask some questions and find out more about it's history.

Yeah, I went into it well aware of the timing belt...in my price range they were all at around 100K, so I wanted to be sure to find one that already had it done...there wasn't a paper record, but there is a sticker on the core support showing that it was done at 81K.
From what I've read it seems they have some issues with lights (inside and out)...only thing I've found on this one is that the climate control knobs don't light up at night, but I think that may just be the bulb.
hopefully that gets better fuel mileage than bros, his got 30 on the road.(jetta)
grandmother Ford Taurus got better mileage (35 mpg)
They're supposed to be in the 28-32 range, I'm not quite through the first tank yet but it's looking like it will be somewhere around 28mpg and has been pretty much mixed city/hwy on this one. The honest TDI owners I've talked to are saying 38-40 is reality in those....the ones that are claiming 50 are ....well....liars IMO.
Pretty good for your Granny's car....but who wants to drive a Walrus?...Oh yeah...Grandmothers!
It has been my primary driver since last summer, but I've also worked mostly from my home office for the past ~5-years. I recently got a promotion into a new position, and with that I'm starting to commute 3-4 days a week, and it's a 75-mile round trip. I'll also be doing more customer visits that could potentially mean occasional driving trips to Austin, Houston, OKC, etc.
The Porsche isn't too bad on fuel...usually 20-23 depending on how much city or hwy, and of course how heavy my foot is, but I don't want to put the miles on it, and I really don't want to have to worry about the parking that often.

nice little car for sure. Just watch for the sludge problem that audi and vw had with those 1.8t motors. If it was (and remailns) well maintained, you should be ok.

Just remember that the electrical systems don't play well with aftermarket stuff. It REALLY pisses the car off if you put in an aftermarket radio.
Yeah, the TDI isn't that fantastic. The day brought my sisters beetle home, I drove 115 miles, pure highway doing 60MPH and got 52MPG. In normal 70/30 mix driving it got 42ish.
