IMO it's pretty difficult to try and compare comics that were in their prime in different decades like that. I would prefer to seperate currently working comics (actively doing stand-up) with older comics that moved on from stand-up, died, or just "retired".

Several of you mention Hicks, but I don't think I have ever heard him.

Of currently working comics I really think that Luis CK is in my number 1 spot. I like Jim Norton a lot too, and have seen him live within the last 5 years.

All that said, I don't watch / follow stand-up as much as I used to.

I'm hit or miss with Carlin, but recognize the brilliance. I think Patrice O'neal was a pure genius. Norton is fucking hilarious, but runs similar stories.
