However, the guy carrying the AR is well within his rights to OC and as long as he isn't harming anyone, the police should tell you that he isn't breaking any laws and you're just going to have to get over it. Just wow. Good thing some kids weren't walking down that road along with unarmed hikers and some coyotes or boars came at the kids. Maybe you'd want them to be armed and protect the kids then? I cycle a lot. The other day I was riding in Frisco by the mall area. I saw 2 coyotes crossing the street -- in the middle of a very populated area. Think some kids walking would be safe there? That was a rural area and by all means I have no problem with the guy carrying for that purpose.

If you take away rights of any kind from anyone, you simply create problems. Is it common to see someone OC'ing an AR-15? No. Should we sound the alarms and have squad cars swarm the area, launch a chopper, and call in SWAT to stop the guy who is OC'ing one? Absolutely not. The guy wasn't a threat, wasn't showing aggressiveness, and was bothering absolutely no one while exercising his right to carry on a hike. Had he been OC'ing by the mall and moving through the parking lot in a tactical manner as if he were going to attack the place, then by all means shoot him. Play stupid games, win stupid prizes. Simply OC'ing on a hike in a rural area isn't playing a stupid game.

As a kid, if I saw someone carrying any type of firearm, we politely would ask what they were carrying, why they carried that particular firearm, etc. I grew up in a rural to semi-rural area, and no one was intimidated just because we saw someone carrying a firearm. In fact, it was thought to be 'cool' if you did. It's much like someone has pointed out about gun racks in your truck.
