First one is the gases discharged from the firing of the shell push down a tube onto the top of a piston, rotating the engine.
Second is the discharge pressure is applied to a screw type assy which in turn rotates the engine..Natural law. Sons are put on this earth to trouble their fathers.

I hated all starters on compressors. Air starters were always rusted, clogged with salt, or slugged with water. Electrical starters always had some jack ass operator running the batteries down or managing to melt all the cables and batteries.
