Im happy with the cameras I have. They are Hikvision 2032 i cameras. They make a 12mm lens camera that will be for long distance. They say you should be able to read a license plate at 35 feet or so. Neighbors mailbox is probably 75 feet from my camera. They make cameras and add on lenses for zoom distance. I saw online some PTZ cameras that will zoom from 3mm to 20mm or so.
These are the cameras I bought but in the standard 4mm lens. The good ole Chinese do have some good examples of zoom and mp
What DVR box do you use with those cameras ? The picture looks good on yours. I want to be able to see faces and read plates with a security camera.
The key is distance. My house is 80' or so from the road which is more than most "neighborhood" houses. Im recording to a Synology NAS. I have had the NAS as a home server for a few years and have 10tb of space to backup/record to. This route (even paying for more than 2 more camera licenses) is cheaper for me than going with a complete system. Im recording at a full 3mp on these 2 cameras 24 hours a day. The other two cameras that will be running hopefully tomorrow (waiting on camera licenses to come) will be on motion record. Hikvision has free NVR software and you can use any basic computer to record
