I can empathize. I love driving and being independent. I am certain that if / when I get to that point, I will have a hard time giving it up. Not to say that is right.. But I can understand how it must feel.

My grandfather wasn't happy when he gave up his license.. But he had just driven through a store front, so it was probably a bit easier for him. Luckily nobody was hurt.

No shit when you are young you could atleast ride a bike etc.

When you are old and stop getting out. You die.

                  I'll be pimping a hover-round.

Then again, maybe in another 30-40 years, we will have self driving cars anyways.

There is a big change in assisted living and nursing homes now. They have many more freedoms but its still going to be hard on any of us to give things up.

You go your whole life being told make your own decisions and make your own way. Only to be stuck in a place and told what to do and when.

I know man.... I see it personally with the wife's grand parents. He's in his mid 80's and really shouldn't be driving any more yet he'll get in his car any time he needs to go somewhere. Fortunately, the accidents he's had in the past few years have been minor and the last one took out a headlight so it won't pass inspection.

What sucks even more is when there are grown ass "kids" that can't find the time to visit and take them places to help keep them from driving.

Yeah.. My grandfather was on steroids for a condition, and they made his feet numb. His shoe fell off while he was driving and he didn't even know. Then it got wedged under the brake pedal, and he couldn't stop. It was a blow to him, but the family sat him down and asked him to please stop driving, at least until / unless he regained feeling, and he agreed. Unfortunately, the same issue ultimately led to his passing, just a couple months later.

He and my grandmother went to lunch with some friends (the friends drove), but it had been raining. As he was stepping up on the curb, his (still numb) foot slipped, casing him to fall and hit his head. That caused bleeding and swelling, and he never recovered (passed away like 2 weeks later). What sucked was that he was conscious, but could not speak, eat, and we were not sure if he could even understand us. He would look at us, but that was it, No other real signs of even knowing who we were.

Was the final straw for one of my Grand-Dads too....except he went full-speed out of his driveway, deflected off of a car in the neighbors driveway and smashed into their living room. All in reverse like a Boss.

The Dia-beetus had taken most of the feeling out of his feet by that time.

Assisted living, yes. Nursing, not really.
