made me do some research.


First introduced in 1899, the Michelin Man's portly figure was suggested by a stack of white Michelin bicycle tires greeting visitors at a 1894 exposition in Lyons, France. The stack of various-sized tires happened, coincidentally, to suggest a human shape.

All tire rubber was originally white. In the very early 1900's, the process of adding "carbon" to the mix made the rubber stronger, and the color changed to black.
