Ya know, I'm not real familiar with what can be done heat treat-wise on that stuff. I normally use it because it welds REAL nice, and is usually very flat/straight/clean. It's super easy to machine too.Originally posted by cobrajet69 View PostWhat? No love for case hardening? lol
On a serious note - I have no idea what cams are made from but have used case 1018 to make case hardened "mild" gears with (e.g. worm).

Standard flat tappet cams are usually cast cores. The higher end roller stuff is some sort of billet, but not sure what. I know it's at least surface heat treated - you can't strike a file on it for shit.

Because of the lack of carbon, 1018 doesn't take well to standard heat treating processes, but can be 'case hardened' to a depth sufficient enough to make the surface tough enough for worm gears for mild apps.
