We do almost always use the leader when running or out in crowded places though. He doesn't pull or get crazy, but the fucker is so social and has to smell everything... it's a reminder to him that we have a purpose, which is not to stop every 3 ft and sniff stuff. It's as loose as it can be without falling off - it obviously doesn't hinder his face licking and beer drinking.
Most of the day while we were on that patio he was sitting on the couch with us without it on though.
