Was it a fasting blood glucose or just a random sample? Big difference.

It is, but cases in older people are also not unheard of. A friend of mine who is 39 was just diagnosed last year. With Type I the pancreas does not just decide to quit overnight. Symptoms can be noticed long before it shuts down. It can continue to produce insulin until it finally goes inactive which can take months after diagnosis.
