Submerging a computer in mineral oil?

Yeah it would last a long time and heat wouldnt be an issue along with noise but that stuff is MESSY! Just hope you never plan on upgrading anything. I also seem to remember it was hard to get a hold of the oil in large quantities also.

Nah, I have an old E8400 and GTX280 that just sits on a shelf as a loaner system when I have LAN parties at my house. I figure make it look pretty at least, then some lucky guy gets to play BFBC2 on it.

Does it serve any other purpose besides looking cool? I understand the heating issue and all, but what is the fan used for now since it isn't blowing on the core? Is it the simple circulation of the oil that it is used for? And...wouldn't that put more stress on the fan since it is circulating the oil and not simply air?

Yes, its purpose is to cool and be dead silent. Even water cooling isnt 100% unless its passive and even then it isnt that great. I honestly dont know if the fans will live longer but all they do is move the oil around so I wouldnt put alot of money into them.

per their site, their first version ran for a couple years and the fans never failed or decreased in speed.

Shit I did that 8 years ago with a buddy of mine. We used a window mounted AC unit as the cooler for the mineral oil and OC'd that thing to the moon. Just about blew up the day we forgot to turn on the AC

I've done it as well. It's only for exhibition... you ruin anything you put in it.. and you eventually run into problems. Hardware failed considerably faster when submerged in mineral oil, for whatever reason. And it's messy as hell.
