Duke Nukem Forever (finally?)

The PC Market is finally getting some attention with The Witcher 2 (ubersampling is nice), and BF3. As much as I have tied up in LCD's, let alone my desktop. It finally feels good to have games stress current hardware.
Nukem is not one of them.

Witcher 2 was made for consoles, but they did include some nice PC touches such as ubersampling.Originally posted by jdgregory84 View PostWitcher 2 will be on xbox as well.
PC gaming isn't dead, I know more people who game on PC's than on consoles. To each their own. (also, go watch the carmack interview he just did. he talks about pc vs console development.)

lol, PC Gaming will never be dead. Maybe comatose for periods of time, but never truly dead. At least not until all functions of PC/Consoles/TVs and other devices are more melded together then they are now.Originally posted by 5.0_CJ View Postpc gaming is permanently dead, don't get your hopes up.Originally posted by MR EDDU defend him who use's racial slurs like hes drinking water.

I started playing Witcher 2 on PC, as I like keyboard/mouse control over gamepad.
Much like The Witcher, it's kind of hard to move and get used to it. The graphics and content are a lot better than the original in Witcher 2, but it's unfortunately much the same game.
I downloaded the Russian Beta of Duke Nukem Forever, about to try it out in a sec at work.

I use to work in the pc game industry, It's nothing like it once was. From a strictly industry/business standpoint - supporting and developing for PC platform is bad business - PC game sales are abysmal since your game instantly gets pirated, and then you have boatloads of complaints due to compatibility bugs. Consoles are easy to format to, completely identical, and pirating is extremely minimal if not monetarily unnoticeable. You will only get ports from consoles because it's rather simple to do the port (a lot of them use a universal container) and then never update/support the product. The only games you will ever see on the PC will be MMORPG (because their complexity lends itself to a PC interface) and monthly subscription services (because several of these interfere with console manufacturers licensing agreements). Both of the aforementioned applications are only temporary. Once the console market is ready, they too will make the move. As far as John Carmack - I've had the opportunity to speak with him at a round table event, and even back in 2004 he knew where the industry was headed, and from a design standpoint it is desirable. I haven't seen his most recent interview.Originally posted by roliath View PostWitcher 2 was made for consoles, but they did include some nice PC touches such as ubersampling.

As far as the games you're mentioning, they are console games. When they do the PC port, they might toss in some simple DX enhancements or shader upgrades while building the container and add additional resolutions, but only if it's quick and easy to do. You're essentially getting the leftovers from the console world. When the next generation of consoles is released, you'll start seeing some real engine level enhancements. The last time I can think of a pc-based game was Crysis. And from a developer/programming standpoint that game was absolute garbage, by far the worst optimization and code I've ever seen. Everyone bragged about how low of an FPS they got. It was because the game was written shitty and the code was unorganized, haphazard, and poorly optimized. And in retrospect, the PC development of that game was very poor from a success standpoint. The console sales annihilated the PC sales, and it was regarded as a pretty poor game for the console.
I've always been a PC Gamer, all the way back to the MSDOS era. I don't argue that the PC is clearly without question more powerful. But the PC game market is dead, you can't deny that - unless you play warcraft or farmville. The truth is the game development will always follow the market - where the money is. The money is in consoles. PC's (for the time being) are getting thrown the scraps, but with every year the PC gaming market declines - you can see this in the games available, and also the game developers and hardware developers going bankrupt. PC's temporarily filled a void that consoles left when the cost of technology/GPU exceeded what the console market could handle. Things are balancing back out now and they won't return. I've been saying this for 10 years and everyone in the PC game community bitched and moaned.Last edited by CJ; 06-09-2011, 12:42 PM."When the people find that they can vote themselves money, that will herald the end of the republic." -Benjamin Franklin

This is because you're not in the targetted age range for any game besides golf and wii fit. j/kOriginally posted by roliath View Post

PC gaming was the huge thing due to multiplayer. Then, it remained the huge thing because of graphics. Now, it's fading out, because video cards alone are costing more than entire gaming consoles.
PC gaming is not dead, but there's no denying that it is fading away.
I can't find anything newer than 2006, but here are the numbers:
pc game sales: $970 million
console sales: $4.8 billion
2006 had the ps3 out in november, and x360 was out in 2005. I would make a wager that the gap has increased in console favors.

The reason you can't find PC game sales is it's so small it isn't even worth running the numbers. Last time I spoke to a buddy at gearbox, the numbers were around 150 million total. console sales are considerably higher than those 06 numbers. I have no problem declaring PC gaming dead, it died with games stopped being specifically developed for them. And you know what? It isn't a bad thing. PC's are a pain in the ass to keep running with software/hardware changes, driver issues, etc. It's completely unnecessary and detracts from the purpose - enjoyability.Originally posted by Magnus View PostThis is because you're not in the targetted age range for any game besides golf and wii fit. j/k

This is something I can agree with, it is quite weak. The only thing I feel is keeping it going is MMORPGs and I think those are losing steam as well.Originally posted by Magnus View PostPC gaming is not dead, but there's no denying that it is fading away.Originally posted by MR EDDU defend him who use's racial slurs like hes drinking water.

Once they can work out contract agreements with the console manufacturers they will be coming to consoles. The most difficult genre to bring across platforms is the RTS game.Originally posted by ceyko View PostThis is something I can agree with, it is quite weak.
