If you're iPhone is up to date, your only option is a tethered jb, which I wouldn't recommend

What all is on that really doesnt need to be on that uses up battery life?

The untether JB is out, but I would wait a bit longer. From reading, some people are having issues. I've been on tethered one with the "semitether" app for a good while. No issues at all, I just can't turn it off. If I do turn it off, the semitether app lets me used the phone, but I can't use any JB apps/settings.

also, double tap the home button from time to time and kill the apps that are running in the background.

turning off 3g, if you don't need it, may help...i leave mine on, though.

Jailbroke mine earlier with no problems. iOS 5.1.

yep. in fact, when you jailbreak, you can't update to the newest firmware until there is a jailbreak for that firmware. (unless you want to go back to stock) when you install a new firmware, it completely erases everything on the device and starts over fresh. jailbreak is just a fancy word that means that you can install programs and tweaks that apple hasn't "signed off" on. there is no physical alteration to the device, so it's easy to go back to stock whenever you need. btw, i took my phone to the apple store to check the home button issue, and they replaced my phone (see my previous thread)...it was jailbroken at the time.
