Best HDD setup

Ok, not doing a build for a few months now but I am curious about the SSD HDD's. Is it best to just slave a normal high RPM HDD to one and put the OS on the SSD? What about the Hybrid drives, are they worth it?

Seagate hybrid drives are nice, but are no replacement for a true SSD. ssd's are worth every single penny in my opinion.

Currently I run 4 intel 80gb ssd's, one vertex 200gb ssd, one gskill pheonix pro ssd, and one enterprise velicoraptor 300gb (hdd) for storage.

when I get my new board i'm going back to my gigabit array (6805 / 4x vertex3)

well all that wont really fit into my budget haha, if I get one 80ish gig SSD and then a nice 500 GB-1TB normal HDD what all exactly should go onto the SSD drive to get the most benefit?

OS/Apps.

You aren't looking for raw speeds, but access times which are basically 0ms with SSD's. Photoshop/Lightroom etc...


If you get a 500gb drive, do your research to get a drive that has one platter. (most should be by now I would assume).

roliath is providing good information. Anything that does something you want on the SSD. Bulk storage put on any old HDD - or even a NAS. Even I am going to upgrade my old ass PC with an SSD - just cause it'll make it do general activities faster.

Sweet, thanks guys. Like I said I will be in Afghanistan til August and plan on waiting til then to build because there is no telling where prices will be and what new cool stuff is out by then . Just wanted to start doing my research on all the new tech out I havent dealt with

I'm using a corsair 120 gig SSD SATA III when I build a comp, which should be soon because I am computerless right now.

Boots winblows 7 in ~10 seconds.

IMO,use two smaller identical SSD's in Raid 0 to make them even faster then a single big SSD. Then add another big HDD for storage.

Raid 0 is basically just making 2 HDD act like 1 HDD correct? it doesnt actually back any data up or anything

unfortunately boot time isn't directly related to ssd's, especially when the pc has to initialize so much shit (like for my pc.)
